Record

• Origins: Founded in 1261 DR by Manshoon at Zhentil Keep. Its history includes periods of expansion, inactivity, and reformation, so this founding account should not be mistaken for an unchanging organization across every era.
• Population / scale: Unknown. It has operated as a network across the Realms; no stable total membership is given.
• Alignment: No single alignment assigned here. Historical leaders and cells vary; the organization has pursued coercive power as well as commercial influence.
• Leaders: Era-dependent and contested. Manshoon founded it; an early triumvirate included Manshoon, Sememmon, and Fzoul Chembryl. Those names are historical references, not a timeless current leadership roster.
• Goals: Historically expanded influence and control. A later mercenary/protection-trade model sought to make merchants depend on Zhentarim services and gain a monopoly over protection. Distinguish that commercial framing and era from the original power-consolidation project.
• Territory: Originated at Zhentil Keep and grew into a dispersed network with strongholds and operations elsewhere. No fixed territory applies across eras.
• Resources: Historically included spies, wizards, Banite clergy, soldiers, agents, and commercial or protection services. Exact resources depend on era and local cell.
• Relationships: Often opposed by groups including the Harpers and Lords' Alliance in some periods; alignments and rivalries change. The Lords' Alliance page records a later alliance status in 1488 DR, illustrating why dates matter. No Idlewood presence is established.

Campaign boundary

Do not conflate the Zhentarim with the Office of Gates or the fictional Crown. The resemblance of covert networks does not establish a connection.
