Source scope: Roll20 handouts Places Within the Gate and The Cell Block, preserved in Journal transcriptions. These describe the existing setting and an opening scene, not an accepted return to the Gate during the local Idlewood playthrough.
Containment areas
Cells, intake corridors, and holding rooms keep people present and accounted for. Guards are visible, movement is deliberate, and routines repeat. The Cell Block description adds maintained smooth stone, narrow cells with iron bars, a torch high on a corridor wall, straw in an empty cell, and a bowl of warm thin broth. It mentions other occupied and empty cells without giving a total.
Work areas
Some sections are unfinished, under repair, expanded, or repurposed. Older stone meets newer construction; exposed structure, uneven floors, and tools mark active work. Prisoners are brought here for labor. Rotating guards, noise, and motion create gaps in attention; conversation, rumors, and exchanges of objects occur here. These are observed setting conditions, not a guaranteed opportunity or a resolved escape.
Authority areas
Administrative halls, interrogation chambers, and quiet rooms for judgment or confession have controlled movement and rare access. People lower their voices when discussing them. The handout does not provide room names, connections, dimensions, defenses, or an access-control specification.
Location relationships and limits
The Gate is layered, but the handouts do not state a measured vertical layout or establish the order in which these spaces connect. Keep these area descriptions separate from the local book's Darkwood route and later Gate chapter until their geography is reconciled. No new map has been invented from the prose.
See The Ninth Gate as an institution for personnel and operation. Current stockpiles, labor force, total cell capacity, and precise placement within Faerûn remain unspecified.
