Source scope: original campaign world. Primary setting: Darkling / Everterra by Elias Marrow. D&D 5e supplies mechanics; Forgotten Realms is setting reference only unless explicitly imported.
Everyday world
Idlewood is an agricultural settlement in a shallow valley between ridges, near a useful eastern road rather than a major crossroads. Wheat, roots, orchards, and livestock sustain it. Its protection is being useful and forgettable: productive enough to survive while ordinary enough to escape major attention.
King Canaan expanded human control through roads, bureaucracy, requisitions, fortresses, labor compounds, diplomacy, coercion, and force. His system reaches ordinary life through taxes, collection, labor demands, inspections, imperfect records, and scarcity. The Crown can provide public order while also allowing coercion and corruption; its people do not all share one outlook.
Seraph, Hugo, and Garr are brothers through childhood and chosen family. They knew one another in an orphanage and were repeatedly displaced by Canaan's systems. They spent years at the Ninth Gate, escaped through ancient passages and the Darkwood, and eventually reached Idlewood. Garr's vow remains absolute: he communicates without speech.
Hidden world
The Ninth Gate stands at the northern edge of the Darkwood against icebound mountains. It is an infamous Crown prison and labor assignment above or near works older than Canaan's regime.
An ancient network lies beneath the region. Some of its routes, transit sites, logistics works, workshops, sealed halls, sentries, and credentials are associated with the Wayfarers. Some works may be older still. “Wayfarer” can describe a tradition, organization, or role; the full history is unresolved.
Edren knew enough to conceal access rather than exploit it. The Hook searches for old sites, maps, knowledgeable people, and credentials. It calls people like Edren Keepers and employs Watchers, some of whom use animals as remote eyes.
Starting world and played instance
These pressures and hidden sites can exist without a player finding them. The supplied Day 17 instance records particular discoveries, deaths, repairs, alliances, and journeys. It does not make those outcomes inevitable in a new game. See Day 17 continuity.
Correction of the earlier library
The library previously relied on the local adaptation's inheritance adventure, First Gate, Office of Gates, and Crow Hollow checkpoint. The owner-supplied Everterra documents now define the original world reference. The earlier adaptation remains labeled and preserved rather than treated as the same playthrough. No app save, mechanics, or live Continuum was changed to match the imported instance.
