The Hook

REFERENCE DOSSIER · 3 MIN READ

Original campaign-world reference. Sections describing the supplied Day 17 instance record that playthrough only; possibilities remain possibilities.

Record type: compartmentalized organization. Canon status: reusable world lore; individual cells, assets, and events vary by campaign instance.

Record

  • Origins: The organization's founding, age, and original purpose are not established in the campaign sources.
  • Population / scale: Unknown. It is compartmentalized, and no total membership or force count is given.
  • Alignment: No collective alignment is established.
  • Leaders: The leader beyond local cells is an open question. No overall commander is named.
  • Goals: Search for ancient credentials, sites, maps, excavation records, and knowledgeable people. Its methods and exact long-term purpose are not fully established.
  • Territory: No sovereign territory is described. It operates through dispersed contacts, records, commerce, surveillance, and field activity across the campaign region.
  • Resources: Potential methods include paid informants, corrupt officials, scouts, ambushes, merchants, records, specialist surveillance, and access to excavation information. The source describes these as available campaign elements; their presence and reach in any instance must be determined rather than presumed.
  • Relationships: It calls people like Edren “Keepers,” and uses the term for people who found portions of the old network and chose to conceal, fragment, protect, or restrict access. Whether Keepers ever formed a formal organization is unresolved. The Hook has used Captain Veyr as an asset in the recorded instance. Watchers are Hook specialists, at least some of whom can use animals as remote eyes.

Mark and limits

The Hook mark is a hook crossing three vertical lines. The three lines are separately associated with Wayfarer access/history; the crossing hook is the Hook's mark.

Watchers' animal surveillance has practical limits: line of sight, finding and retaining a target, distance, concealment, deception, and interpretation. The Hook is not omniscient.

Campaign use

Its effects may appear before anyone learns the organization's name: questions about old maps, unusual purchases, missing records, surveillance, or interest in knowledgeable people. These are possible clues, not mandatory encounters. A fresh campaign should not inherit the current PC's pursuit or any cell's exact status.

Current-instance evidence (not universal starting state)

The supplied Day 17 continuum records pursuit of the player after Edren's death, missing records, Veyr's lost contact, disappearing Hook men, and repeated halfling sightings. It records the Hook pursuing the white-eyed construct, Veyr's information sales, and Watcher surveillance of Brogar's caravan through a hawk. The player grounded the hawk alive; prisoners revealed the Watcher function, and the hawk was subsequently killed to cut surveillance. These events and casualties are specific to that instance.

Unknown / do not infer

Do not invent its founding, total population, collective alignment, central leader, fixed territory, or universal access to the ancient network. The locations and capabilities of individual cells remain instance-specific.
