Wayfarers and the old network

REFERENCE DOSSIER · 3 MIN READ

Original campaign-world reference. Sections describing the supplied Day 17 instance record that playthrough only; possibilities remain possibilities.

On this page

Record type: ancient tradition and infrastructure association; possibly an organization and a role/title. Canon status: reusable world lore. The name must not be treated as proof of a unified present-day political body.

Record

  • Origins: The Wayfarers are associated with old infrastructure, but the campaign does not establish that they built every structure connected to them. They may have inherited or linked works of still older origin. Their beginnings and chronology are unknown.
  • Population / scale: Unknown. No surviving membership count or present-day population is established.
  • Alignment: No collective alignment is established.
  • Leaders: Unknown. No current leader or complete command structure is named.
  • Goals / role: The tradition is associated with surveying, routes, movement, engineering, logistics, and connecting distant sites. Some ancient constructs may have carried out Wayfarer functions or held the title “Wayfarer.” Do not assume all infrastructure was created by one group.
  • Territory: A dispersed network of sites is buried beneath and beyond the Idlewood region. Known or possible infrastructure includes routes, transit points, logistics facilities, workshops, sentries, sealed halls, and concealed passages. Its extent is unknown.
  • Resources: Compatible fixed-site transit receivers, administrative credentials, maps, workshops, constructs, and infrastructure are evidenced as parts of the wider network; possession by a current Wayfarer body is not established.
  • Relationships: The Hook searches for old sites and credentials. People called Keepers concealed, fragmented, protected, or restricted access to parts of the network; whether Keepers ever formed an organization is unknown. The meaning of “Wayfarer” remains deliberately open as both tradition/organization and role/title.

Marks and access

Three vertical lines are associated with Wayfarer access/history. The continuum distinguishes this from the Hook's mark: a white hook crossing the lines. Three lines alone do not prove a person or site is controlled by the Hook.

Edren's dark-metal object is an administrative credential for portions of the ancient network, not merely a door key. It may work across compatible sites and may have paired credentials. It is not established as unique or as an item automatically held by a player character.

Campaign use

Keep the ancient network incomplete and initially obscured by ordinary life. Sites may be damaged, abandoned, sealed, active, or unknown to locals. A fresh campaign should create the conditions and discoverable traces, not copy another player's discoveries or assign ownership of a sentient construct.

Current-instance evidence (not universal starting state)

In the supplied Day 17 instance, the coalition discovered Wayfarer Logistics Annex Seven beneath Weller and established it as a hidden logistics base. Edren's credential was recognized by the first Sentry as authorizing the player temporarily. The white-eyed construct reported that Ninth Gate had taken its paired credential. These are that playthrough's discoveries and reports, not guaranteed outcomes or proof of current Wayfarer political membership.

Unknown / do not infer

Do not invent a population, alignment, leader, present-day headquarters, complete history, exclusive ownership of the network, or a single origin for every connected structure.
